Total Quality Management (MNG164)


Total quality management is an introductory course for understanding quality management and it’s role in today’s management theory and practices. Quality management theories, concepts, techniques, methods, tools and their wide practical application are introduced to the students during the course. It starts with the definitions of quality, quality management and total quality management, comprises history of quality and it’s management, famous quality gurus and their works, ideas and concepts, also key tools and techniques for quality management. The course ends with the case study of total quality management practical application.

Course objectives

There are two objectives of this course. The first is to introduce the students to the evolution and history of quality management and quality gurus. For that reason quality, quality management, product quality, service quality, process quality, measurement of quality are deeply analyzed through definitions and practical application. Much attention is paid to the history of quality and quality management. Also, total quality management components, values, principles are deeply studied. The theoretical part of the course finishes with the introduction to quality costs. Further down the course the same theory of total quality management is analyzed through the works, ideas, methods and methodologies of quality gurus. The second objective of the course is to systematically introduce students to the tools for identifying, measuring, analyzing, improving and controlling of quality. Also, quantitative and qualitative quality management techniques are introduced along with illustrations of their practical application. The course should serve students as a guideline for better orientation among the theories and concepts of quality management and as a handbook for practical application of techniques and tools for quality management.

Learning outcomes

  • Ability to operate the main concepts, laws, and techniques of total quality management.
  • Ability to operate the methodologies, methods, and tools of lean manufacturing system.
  • Ability to apply these concepts of total quality management and lean manufacturing for investigation and synchronisation of manufacturing processes.
