Bilkent University is the first private, non-profit university in Turkey. It was founded in October 20, 1984, by Professor İhsan Doğramacı, M.D., with the fundamental aim of creating a center of excellence in higher education and research. The name "Bilkent" exemplifies this aim, since it is an acronym of "bilim kenti" or "city of learning and science." The University campus is located by the main highway to Eskişehir about 12 km. (10 miles) west of the center of Ankara, and covers an area of more than 500 hectares (1200 acres). Bilkent University has 33 bachelor, 6 associate, and 47 graduate programs in a variety of fields. Over 2,000 courses are given at the University's nine faculties, two applied schools and three vocational schools.
