About the doctoral dissertation:

One particular effect of globalisation on higher education is the focus on internationalisation. Internationalisation can be realised via many activities, academic staff mobility being one of them. International experience of academics, therefore, is an area that remains largely under-examined. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the relationship between short-term international academic mobility and career outcomes, and its mediating and moderating mechanisms. This research aimed to understand the relationships between short-term international academic mobility and the three aspects of career outcomes: career success, perceived marketability and performance. It also analysed the mediating mechanisms of career capital and cultural intelligence and the moderating (strengthening) role of motivation and openness. A theoretical model was developed based on the social cognitive theory. A two-phase exploratory study, employing sequential mixed methods – qualitative followed by quantitative – was performed to test the hypothesised relationship. In the first phase, a qualitative exploration of short-term international academic mobility (motivation to engage in it) was conducted. For the main data collection, a cross-sectional quantitative research – a survey – of academic staff was conducted. The results of the research revealed a positive relationship between short-term international academic mobility and academic career success, perceived marketability and academic performance. This relationship was partially mediated by career capital. The partial mediation of cultural intelligence was observed also in the relationship between short-term international academic mobility and academic performance. This research also revealed a positive relationship of motivation and openness with career capital and cultural intelligence.
